Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, but always thought provoking, The Abortion Monologues exist in stark contrast to the real world in which women seldom publicly discuss this choice.
The Abortion Monologues eBook Jane Cawthorne
I purchased this work after a fight with family over US Thanksgiving about abortion (I am someone who has built a career out of promoting abortion rights and advocacy). This quick read is witty, poignant, at times gut-wrenching and others hilarious, and it ultimately is a perfect reminder as to why I do what I do.Product details

The Abortion Monologues eBook Jane Cawthorne Reviews
Moving and timeless.
I have performed in the abortion monologues and it was one of the most moving experience. These stories are so true to life. It is well worth the read. Ms. Cawthorne has hit the perfect note in these stories.
So glad to see this play in written form now! Makes it more accessible. I saw the play at one of its first premieres in the U.S. years ago and was blown away. A very worthy successor to its famous namesake (Vagina Monologues), it relates moving and realistic stories that put women's hearts and beings at the center of abortion. The play creates empathy for women and an understanding for why abortion is an ethical choice even if it's a difficult one.
I saw this play years back in Canada and the theatre was packed to the gills! It was a moving experience and owning a copy of the play itself means a lot to me. It's a honest and varied portrayal of some of the ways real people who experience abortion react to the experience. For some, it's life-changing, difficult and full of confusion and grief. For some, it's a routine appointment they're thrilled to be through with and they don't look back. It's honest, beautiful, at times challenging and heart-breaking. In my mind, it's a pro-choice statement to illustrate the validity of all experiences. I would read this and see it live again and again!
I saw The Abortion Monologues many years ago in Canada, and it's had a lasting impact on my perception of abortion and the women who have abortions. The stories told by the 23 women in the play challenged my assumptions, deepened my conviction that the right to choose is imperative, and broadened my perspective in more ways than I expected. The women's lives, their stages in life, and their reasons for having an abortion vary widely, which gives a depth to the monologues, a ring of truth to the whole. Whether as a book or as a play, these monologues are worth hearing.
